OOM: Orpheus

Steve keeps his arm around Orpheus until they're well into the apartment. "Keep me company in the kitchen?" he says, sliding his fingers just above the waistband of Orpheus's jeans.

Steve tosses the greens and strawberries together and divides them onto the plates.

Orpheus rummages around a while before finding what he's looking for and then brings them out, handing them over.

Steve gives him a kiss, and then crumbles the cheese over the salad and adds the slices of steak. "I'll let you do your own dressing." He gives Orpheus a plate, takes his own, and goes to the table.

Orpheus follows him to the table, picking up their drinks as well and carrying them over. "So, fruit and meat in a salad. Let's get this daring meal started."

Steve smiles and has a sip of wine. "There were times when I was a kid when we felt lucky to have apples."

He smiles softly, shaking his head. "I can't imagine that. Not as a child."

There were times as an adult when he had very little, but it was almost always by choice.

"Life in the city. We didn't even do victory gardens much, during the war. Now there are rooftop gardens and community gardens and they sell herbs to grow in your kitchen." He shakes his head in wonder at it all.

Orpheus gives a quiet laugh. "When I was a child, there were no cities without gardens. It would have been unimaginable."

"I think you had fewer people then, and more room to spread out."

"Yes, I'm aware," he says with a faint smirk. "I saw the population grow."

"It makes a big difference."

"It certainly changed things."

"Do you miss it?" Steve asks softly. "All that... space?"

"Sometimes? I miss having nature where people are, or within an easy walk."

Steve nods. "I notice that, too."

"You...notice me missing it?"

[thekidfrombrooklyn]

"No, I mean," Steve begins, then frowns a little and says, "Well, now that I think about it, yes. The city isn't the easiest place for you to be, really."

"Not always, no," he agrees. "But neither is the country."

"Where would you go, given the choice of anywhere?" He smiles. "The ocean?"

Orpheus glances down at his plate and then up at Steve with a wry smile. "Home."

"Oh," Steve says quietly and pours himself more wine.

He shrugs, playing with his fork in his salad for a moment. "I need an audience for my music. And I...have a preference for being close to the earth. There aren't many places that have both."

"Central Park?" Steve suggests.

[golden_lyre]

"One of my favorites," Orpheus confesses. "But very cultivated."

"And you're looking for something more wild. Hm."
