OOM: Orpheus

Steve does not hustle Orpheus upstairs.

This is not to say he doesn't have plans. The way his hand lingers on the small of Orpheus's back is practically suggestive.

Orpheus tilts his head curiously. "Do I show regret after coming?"

Steve hesitates, fingers gently tracing over Orpheus's side. "I don't know how else to read that look in your eyes sometimes--like you wish I were--easier," he decides with a faint smile. "Instead of crazy about you."

"I wouldn't want you easier," Orpheus says after a moment. "But...I do worry sometimes about you being crazy about me."

"If that's a mistake, that's mine to make.

"But I don't think it's a mistake."

He picks up the soap to start washing off the soot and sweat he's been covered in.

"And aren't my mistakes mine to make as well?" Orpheus asks, taking the soap from Steve to take over washing him.

"I suppose so," Steve murmurs and turns to let Orpheus wash his back. "I guess we're going to keep on worrying about each other, aren't we?"

"Yeah, I guess so," Orpheus says quietly. "For a while."

Steve exhales slowly.

"If we're a romance, we're a doomed one, thinking like that."

[golden_lyre]

"What do you mean?" Orpheus asks, kissing Steve's shoulder as he finishes washing Steve.

Steve turns again and takes Orpheus's face in his hands. He gives him a deep, sweet kiss. "You already see us ending, don't you?"

Orpheus slides an arm around Steve's waist. "Everything ends for me, lovely."

Steve leans their foreheads together. "Everything ends for everyone, but people still promise to stay together."

[golden_lyre]

"I can't promise something like that," Orpheus says.

Steve sighs and nods. "Like I said. Doomed." He lets Orpheus go to duck his head under the shower spray.

Orpheus frowns and moves to step out of the shower, picking up a towel as he does to dry off.

Steve washes his hair quickly and turns the water off. He opens the shower and watches Orpheus.

"I know you warned me from the beginning," he says. "I suppose all that extra time I've had to think about it makes me wish things were different."

"You're the one saying it's doomed," Orpheus says quietly.

"Because you're imposing a time limit."

[golden_lyre]

"Not a time limit," Orpheus says. "I haven't said it'll be over in a year or five or twenty."

"But you do think about it ending." Steve crosses his arms over his chest, hands under his arms. "Instead of enjoying the now."

[golden_lyre]

Orpheus looks at him a moment before responding.

"I'm enjoying the now. But...Steve, if we were together seventy years, it'd be a lifetime for you. It'd be a...holiday for me."

"What if it isn't?" Steve whispers and swallows hard. "My body is constantly healing itself, rebuilding itself. That's why I burn so hot, why I'm hungry so often. I may not age. I may not even die.

"Do you really think you'd still want me in a hundred years, or are you always ready to say goodbye?"

[golden_lyre]

"I have to be ready. I never know when I'll have to," Orpheus answers softly.

"But I...don't see myself not wanting you any time soon."

Steve stalks across the room, backing Orpheus against the nearest wall. "I don't see myself not wanting you any time soon, either. Lucky for you, I'm an optimist."

He kisses Orpheus fiercely.

Orpheus groans into the kiss, arms wrapping around Steve, keeping him close.
